This will depend on dimensions, but a custom-built cover for a pool around 2m x 2m will cost $1,500 + GST.

Over time, the timber battens will fade and will need to be re-oiled, especially if the timber is exposed to the elements. Most oils would just require the battens to be clean and dry before re-applying.

The timber battens on a Sparmadillo cover are oiled using 2 coatings of Cutek Extreme CD50 with a ‘tussock’ tint – see Cutek’s site for more information.

A roll-up cover has 20mm of wool insulation, which doesn’t quite match the insulative properties of a new thick polystyrene cover – but is superior to an older waterlogged polystyrene cover.

To increase insulation, a layer of EVA foam can be added to float on the water’s surface underneath the roll-up cover. Our tests have shown that Sparmadillo cover combined with a layer of floating EVA foam provides the same insulation as a new standard type of spa cover with 100mm thick polystyrene.

When in use, you can roll your cover to the edge of the pool, roll it completely off the onto the deck, or preferably onto a shelf level with the top of the pool.

In the case of a lockable cover, the cover needs to be able to support a 20kg load, allow water run-off, be secure with straps and lockable fasteners, and include water signage.

Sparmadillo covers comply with these requirements, and can be supplied with d-rings and locking clips to be made lockable.

There are minor variations between different local authorities, but generally, spa pools should either:

• Be fenced to prevent entry.
• Or, if the pool is 5 square meters or less and has sides at least 760mm high, have a lockable cover.

The maximum size for our laminated timber battens is 2400mm, which means the maximum pool size is 2300mm from outer edge to outer edge.

Many swim spas will be outside the maximum size for a Sparmadillo, but two covers that meet in the middle could work for some smaller sized swim spas.

Sparmadillo spa covers are covered with a warranty to repair or replace any faulty product within 12 months of purchase.
