Rapid Heat Loss in the Winter
Winter spa covers have a lot to contend with: Less sunlight, rapid heat loss, increased evaporation, an – in the case of outdoor spa covers – frost and rain.
Traditional polystyrene covers often struggle in these conditions. They absorb moisture evaporating from the spa, especially during the colder months, becoming heavy and waterlogged. This not only makes them harder to lift but also reduces their ability to hold heat. On top of that, their thin outer skins can crack or tear in the cold, further decreasing insulation performance.

Built for Cold Weather Performance
Sparmadillo covers are custom-fitted to your spa pool or hot tub, creating a tight, efficient seal that minimises heat loss in cold air. With temperatures dropping in winter, maintaining water heat becomes more important and more costly if you rely on a poorly fitted or waterlogged lid
Our natural 20 mm NZ wool insulation keeps warmth where it belongs, and the waterproof outer layer prevents moisture from escaping or freezing on the cover. The unique timber battens built into every Sparmadillo cover help maintain shape and stability, even on frosty mornings, ensuring the cover rolls smoothly and stays easy to use in any weather.

Reduce Power Bills
NZ wool provides reliable thermal stability in cold climates, helping your spa retain heat more effectively and reducing how often your heater needs to run. Lower heat loss also means less evaporation, which reduces water consumption and the amount of chemicals needed to maintain your spa’s balance.
In particularly cold regions, pairing your Sparmadillo cover with a floating layer of EVA foam significantly boosts thermal performance for maximum winter efficiency.
Roll-Up Ease in Cold Conditions
Hinged spa lids often become heavy as they absorb water. In winter, that moisture can freeze inside the foam, making them even more difficult to lift. Sparmadillo covers use NZ wool instead of polystyrene, so they resist waterlogging and stay light and manageable, even in freezing temperatures.
The roll-up design lets you open your spa quickly on cold mornings or chilly evenings, meaning less time shivering outside and more time enjoying a warm soak!

A few questions we’ve gotten about winter spa covers:
Do I need different insulation for winter?
Not necessarily. Our standard NZ wool insulation is highly effective in cold temperatures. However, adding a floating EVA foam layer can further reduce heat loss.
Will Sparmadillo covers freeze or become stiff in cold weather?
No. Because we use NZ wool instead of polystyrene, our covers don’t freeze, stiffen, or crack in low temperatures.
Will a winter spa cover reduce my power bill?
Results vary by household, climate, and spa type, but high-quality winter insulation helps reduce heater run time and can save on power over the colder months. It also reduces wear on your spa’s heating system.
Does the cover stay light even after heavy rain?
Yes. Our waterproof materials prevent waterlogging, and the cover maintains its shape and weight even after prolonged exposure to wet or frosty conditions.
